Mahalo for visiting! E komo mai....(welcome)

Hula Me Kala Culture Appreciation, Inc

Perpetuating the breath
of Hawaii through
      hula and language

Kumu hula (instructor) Kala has been a student, dancer, appreciator and enthusiast of hula since the age of 5.  Her maternal roots were planted in the ground of Hamakuapoko, Maui, Hawaii in 1900, thus creating Kumu's connection and appreciation for its culture. Through the many years of instruction from various kumu, it was the late Auntie Ehulani Lum that built the structure and foundation of hula for Kumu Kala, back in the 1980s. It was during adult life, in the Coachella Valley, where there was NO hula, that Kumu Kala was asked to begin a hula class in the desert.  It was the honorable pleasure of Kumu Kala to share her spirit and love of the hula with her students and audiences.  Blessed with the opportunity to study under the lineage of Loea Kawaikapuolakalani Hewett, instructor Carla Kala'alohiikamakaokalaua'e Culbertson received uniki certification in May of 2012 and Kihe Pua in December 2013.  Please visit loeahula.com for more information about the hula lineage in which our group studies (Monday & Tuesday's classes only).

Located in the heart of Palm Springs area, our group has been sharing our love of the islands and its culture through hula with our community since 1996. Our very first show as a halau was for the American Cancer Society Relay for Life at Cathedral City High School in 2001.  From that moment on, we made it our mission to give back to those who help others in our community and beyond.  We continue to support the Relay for Life and have included Gilda's Club, The Desert Stroke Recovery Center, Make A Wish Foundation, ELKS, and the Red Hatters Association to our kokua calendar.  As a  non-profit organization in native culture preservation, we use that as fuel to share our love of this culture with others.  We give special kokua and attention to those people who help people.  We appreciate what you do, we love you, we support you, we dance for you!
